I’ve Watched Elk Grove Grow From Almost Nothing

The Real Elk Grove: Pockets, Builders, and Life Since 1991

Most people know Elk Grove as a fast-growing suburb of Sacramento. To me, it’s a lifetime of memories. I’ve watched this city transform since 1991, back when Laguna Blvd only had a single stoplight and most of the west side was still open fields.

I still remember the days when I’d dig through every couch cushion in the house, collecting all the quarters I could find, just so I could bike over to the closest Round Table Pizza. I’d spend days there, glued to the Street Fighter 2 machine, challenging anyone who walked by. That was the Elk Grove I grew up in—simple, connected, and full of character.

Today, I’m raising my three boys (ages 16, 11, and 2) in that same city. I’m a product of our schools (Foulks Ranch, Harriet Eddy, and Laguna Creek High), and now I’m navigating the district as a parent. My kids attend some of the top-rated spots in the city, including Zehnder Ranch Elementary and the #1 high school in Elk Grove: Cosumnes Oaks.

I Know Where the "Pockets" Are

I grew up in Laguna Woods, which remains one of the most sought-after, established areas in town. In 2014, I purchased my first home in The Ridge (behind the Costco center). A lot of people don't realize that The Ridge is actually a master-planned puzzle made up of over six different builders—including Taylor Morrison, JMC, and Meritage. Each block has a different "vibe" and build quality.

Three years ago, I moved my family into our current home in Madera Meadows, a Taylor Morrison build that has been perfect for our growing crew.

The Gold Standard: My Top 3 Elk Grove Builders

If you want a home that holds its value, you have to look at the builder. In my experience, these three usually get a higher resale price-per-square-foot because of their quality:

  1. JTS: Known for elite layouts and luxury finishes that stand the test of time.

  2. Taylor Morrison: My personal choice—excellent construction and thoughtful designs.

  3. JMC: A local powerhouse with high buyer demand and rock-solid builds.

 

My Favorite Neighborhoods for 2026

If you are moving to Elk Grove, these are the "pockets" I personally vouch for:

  • Stonelake & Storybook: Great community amenities and unique character.

  • Madera East & West Meadows: Beautifully planned and incredibly family-oriented.

  • The Waterfronts: We only have three man-made lakes: Laguna Lake, Laguna West Lake, and Camden Lake. If you want a view, these are your targets.

  • Gated Privacy: We only have 5 to 7 gated communities in the entire city. If security is your priority, you have to know which pocket to look in.

 

Why 2026 is the Year for Elk Grove

The "one stoplight" town of my childhood is now a major destination. With the Sky River Hotel expansion bringing in massive concerts, the new Whole Foods opening, and a brand-new elementary school under construction near Big Horn and Kyler, the lifestyle here is unmatched.
